PROJECTS

Since its establishment in 1988, MOm has successfully carried out several national and European–funded projects. These projects have focused on:

• Scientific Research

• Public awareness and Sensitization

• Environmental Education

• Rescue and Rehabilitation of sick, wounded and orphan seals

• Monitoring human activity in Marine Protected Areas

• Developing conservation strategies for marine and coastal areas in Greece

• Promoting the establishment of Marine Protected Areas.

Current Projects

Cyclades LIFE

The program CYCLADES LIFE, “Integrated Monk seal conservation of Northern Cyclades” is implemented by WWF Greece, MOm, the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate Change, the Decentralised Administration Authority of the Aegean, the Development Corporation of Local Authorities of Cyclades S.A, Harokopio University, and Tethys Research Institute. The program aims to establish for the first time in Greece, a new Marine Protected Area (MPA) around the Natura site of Gyaros (a deserted islet – former exile site), under a management plan that will be designed with a holistic and interdisciplinary approach and use a pioneering methodology that will promote sustainable development in local communities, support sustainable fisheries and protect biodiversity.

The program is being implemented with the contribution of the LIFE financial instrument of the European Union and the Prince Albert ΙΙ of Monaco Foundation.

Completed Major Projects

The Mediterranean monk seal returns to the coasts of the Argosaronic Gulf

The Mediterranean monk seal itself showed the way to MOm’s researchers towards the Argosaronic Gulf! During the last seven years (2006-2013), MOm, via its Rescue & Information Network, has collected 296 information regarding monk seals’ observations in the area, while 19 of them were about newborns (pups). The presence of the species in an area with such a strong human presence and activity is a remarkable fact of extreme importance!

Therefore, MOm’s new initiative entitled “The Mediterranean monk seal, Monachus monachus, returns to the coasts of the Argosaronic Gulf”, initiated in May 2014, aims at the study of the species population in the area and of its habitat through field research, the mapping and assessment of its habitat (breeding caves or not) as well as raising awareness, sensitization and active involvement of the local populations through various actions and educational tools.

The project is implemented with major donor the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the co-financing of the Thalassa Foundation.

LIFE "Thalassa"

The European program “Thalassa: Learn, Act, Protect: Information, Education, Participatory Campaign for Marine Mammals in Greece 2010 – 2013”, is a LIFE+ Information & Communication program of the European Community carried out by MOm and WWF Greece, in cooperation with the Cetacean Research Institute Pelagos and the research institute Tethys. Thalassa project aims at introducing us to the marine mammals of Greece and the threats they face and propose ways of how we can contribute to their protection.

LIFE MOFI

The MOFI project «Monk seal & Fisheries: Mitigating the conflict in Greek seas» is a LIFE-NATURE funded project targeted on the interaction between the Mediterranean monk seal and the fishery sector.

The project’s objective is to mitigate the negative consequences that this interaction yields to both monk seals and fisheries, i.e. increased mortality for the monk seal population and loss of income for the fishermen.

The project’s overall aim is to ensure sustainability for the fishery sector and promote conservation efforts for the No1 critically endangered marine mammal in Europe, the Mediterranean monk seal.
