Little Rodoula!

26/01/2023

While the two male monk seal pups, Hermes and Minoas, are almost ready for their return to the sea, an unexpected visitor arrived in our Rehabilitation Center on Friday night! Little “Rodoula”, urgently flew with Aegean Airlines from the island of Rhodes where she was found, clearly malnourished and exhausted. The personnel of the Rhodes Αquarium - Hydrobiological Station - HCMR initially transferred the animal from Kolympia beach where it was found to their facilities to administer first aid. The obvious bad state of the animal deemed it necessary to transfer the seal to MOm’s Rehabilitation Center in the Attica Zoological Park, where it was determined that despite the seal being two months old, her weight was half of what it should be. The little female seal is now in quarantine, while going through all necessary medical testing and at the same time receiving proper medical care. Her status is extremely critical, but we hope she will pull through and soon be able to join Hermes and Minoas so that they can all return to their beloved sea.

We would like to thank the personnel of the Rhodes Αquarium - Hydrobiological Station - HCMR for their immediate and significant help, the members of ARION’s network, Margies Panagiotis and his assistant Mrs. Dimitra Sfakiou, as well as Aegean Airlines for transferring the little seal on the night flight from Rhodes to Athens, thus greatly increasing the chances of survival for the animal.
