CALYPSO'S RELEASE

23/04/2026

The big day has arrived! Little Calypso, healthy and strong, has returned to the open sea! Thanks to the dedication of our rehabilitation team and veterinarians, as well as the little seal’s own resilience, an animal that was in very poor health has made an impressive recovery! We wish her safe and happy journeys in the Greek seas!

Calypso’s release took place in the protected area of Gyaros, in the presence of the staff of the South Aegean Management Unit of NECCA, and it happened to coincide with the day the Ministry of Environment and Energy announced the issuance of a Presidential Decree for the comprehensive protection of the area. A development which, although it came after many setbacks and delays, can only be described as very positive.

We would especially like to thank the residents of Lipsi who participated in Calypso’s rescue, veterinarian Mr. Michalis Kontrafouris of the Leros Veterinary Center for providing first aid to the animal, as well as Blue Star Ferries for the safe transport of the little seal during its rescue.

We also thank Attica Zoological Park for hosting and providing technical support for the rehabilitation facilities. MOm’s Rescue & Rehabilitation activities benefit from the support of the Monk Seal Alliance for 2026
